Principle Design Engineer - StructuresGeneral Characteristics • Applies a thorough knowledge of current principles and practices of engineering as related to the business and its projects• Leads significant project tasks and/or oversees elements of multiple projects with respect to a functional areaTypical Technical Responsibilities • Serves as a technical specialist for the organisation in the application of advanced concepts, principles, and methods in an assigned area• Serves as technical authority on one or more functional areas across multiple programmes• Interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates assignments • Keeps informed of new methods and developments affecting the organisation, providing recommendations for new practicesManagerial Responsibilities • Supervises staff allocated to specific assignments• Plans , schedules, or coordinates the preparation of documents or activities for multiple major projects, or is responsible for an entire project functional area• Reviews operational procedures to ensure compliance with applicable policies and performance measuresDirection Received • Receives administrative supervision with assignments being given in terms of broad general objectives and boundsCommunication skills • Routinely interacts with clients, customers, officials, contractors and others• Leads project meetings and delivers presentations• Represents the organisation and maintains liaison with individuals in specific contextsTypical Experience • 10 + yearsTypical professional qualifications and community activities • Engineering council professional registration • Member of professional practice organisation• Personally managed CPD portfolio• Serves on local professional committeesDepartmental Responsibilities:• Ownership of the 3D definition of the full vehicle• Responsibility for the vehicle architectural design using Catia V5• Occupant positioning• Ownership of the section book• 3D package modelling• Manage interface with styling• Engineering responsibility (including design and release) of full vehicle body systems:• Structures, Panels, Closures, Glazing, Sealing, Lighting, Wiper Systems, NVH• Engineering responsibility (including design and release) of full vehicle interior systems:• Fascia, Tunnel, Seating, Restraints, Trim panel , Instrument and controls, Door trim, Trunk Systems, HVAC• Design for manufacture and assembly for responsible components• Ensuring responsible designs meet legal compliance• Work Package Management• Design Sizing Analysis• Sub system load analysis• Joints and interface design• Materials selection• Fixing selection justification with appropriate bolt calculations• Specific Role Responsibilities and Experience:• To lead the design and engineering of welded aluminium based body in white structures• Proven track record for the design and engineering of aluminium automotive primary structures utilising extrusions, sheet and cast/forged materials• Experience of specifying joining technologies including CMT or MIG welding processes• Able to select materials and processes appropriate to engineering requirements such as strength, durability, crashworthiness, cost and manufacturing constraints• Thorough understanding of manufacturing processes associated with aluminium including but not limited to heat treatments, coatings, assembly and process tolerances • Casting and forging design experience and understanding of high and low production rate driversMiscellaneous:• Identify and highlight any areas for continuous improvement• Ensure that your technical knowledge and expertise is kept up to date• Mentor and support professional development of all colleagues, particularly junior staff• To perform any other duties that may well be reasonably expected within the remit of the role• To ensure compliance with the Health, Safety and Environmental Policy requirements within areas of responsibility
